When Donald Driver, the Green Bay Packers all-time leading receiver and “Dancing with the Stars” champion decided to retire, the city of Green Bay decided to name a street after him. And it wasn’t just an ordinary street. It happened to be Pearl Street where the famous “Receiver” statue resides in front of Titletown Brewery, a popular local restaurant brewery.
The Street dedication occurred at the corner of former Pearl and Dousman Streets and coincided with the unveiling of a re-worked Receiver statue in the likeness of Driver who represents the quintessential NFL receiver.
Green Bay’s Mayor Jim Schmitt commented, “Packer fans enjoyed Donald Driver’s 14 seasons with the team along with his charitable involvement with many organizations. This special honor is an appropriate tribute to recognize his work on and off the field.”
During Driver’s time in Green Bay, he set all-time records for career receptions and yards and is recognized as one of the most charitable athletes in our city’s history. During the dedication and unveiling event, a tearful Driver said, “It’s crazy to think, I went from living on the street as a kid to now having my own street. I never could have imagined this day would come and am thankful to all the fans that made this possible.”
Smet Construction Services played an integral part in the event’s staging and signage. In addition, Smet custom-tailored several hundred yards of fabric to cover the statue to create suspense after its remodeling but before the unveiling. Karen Klevesahl, who worked on the project for Smet said: “It was a challenge to bring together, but it was a very positive experience. Everyone was very helpful and it says a lot about our community in its willingness to help.”
Karen added: “Anyone need some fabric? Great for Halloween ghost costumes!”
