New Year Means Continuous Improvement!

From time to time, I’ve written about self-improvement topics such as one of my all-time favorite books, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by noted author Steven Covey whose book has sold over 25 million copies since its original publication in 1989. Covey’s book spells out all you need to know if you want to improve your effectiveness in the workplace or even with loved ones at the homestead.
Among the habits of putting first things first and thinking win-win is the final habit of continuous improvement, that of sharpening the saw. Shortly, after the New Year began, the Smet Offices shut down for an afternoon to focus on this final habit of “Continuous Improvement”.
This year our continuous improvement day was organized by Mona Pagel, a counselor in northeast Wisconsin who provides seminars on healthy relationships among other topics. Exercises were undertaken to renew our energy, focus on goals for the New Year, take stock of ourselves, think about change, think about our workplace, and just plain old coming together to enjoy each other’s company for an afternoon of getting away from it all.
The topics and ideas flowed as Mona coaxed methods and improvement ideas from Smet associates. There was a genuine willingness to share ideas and experiences on issues facing employees. At the end of the exercises, the group was re-energized with a renewed sense of energy, and ready to begin the goals for the New Year. Overall, we’ve strengthened relationships each other which always helps during “crunch times” which are bound to happen as the year progresses. Happy Belated New Year everyone!
