This time of year is always a little unique. The end of year is approaching and while it can be the start of a slower season, it often is very busy as we work to complete tasks and projects before the holidays as well as some transactions prior to the year’s end. It also is a time when we prepare for the year ahead. This year we continue to help customers lay out their 2015 plans and to assist businesses with our pre-construction services.
2014 has shaped up to be a good year at Smet Construction Services. We’ve been very active with several highly visible projects in our downtown and new projects have also come on-line. The local picture is being reflected on the national scene. Recently, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released the latest construction employment statistics reporting the construction industry adding over 20,000 jobs during the month of November. Further, the BLS reports the industry has averaged the addition of approximately 21,000 new construction jobs each month during 2014.
As expected, the numbers on U.S. construction spending echoes the positive jobs outlook. From January through October 2014, total construction spending was reported by the U.S. Census Bureau at $800.6 billion or 5.8% higher than the first ten months of 2013. The Bureau predicts the year finishing up at a 6.6% increase over last year.
As stated above, the positive national scene has been reflected in Green Bay and the Fox Valley. Throughout 2014, Smet continued to serve several commercial sectors and this year we particularly strengthened our offerings in the medical, educational, and restaurant construction sectors.
As you make your business plans for 2015, if you are contemplating a construction project as part of those plans, give us a call or stop in and see us. We’ll listen to your needs and help you determine your options.
Thanks to all of our customers, our vendors, and our employees. We’ll be going into the New Year stronger and able to build on our accomplishments from this year. We look forward to continue serving our customers in the year ahead. And as always we wish you much success and prosperity in the year ahead!
